If you’ve been to FUSE lately, you may have noticed new signs outside what used to be the jewelry studio upstairs. This room is now CNM Ingenuity’s Quantum Learning Lab (QuLL). Last year, CNM received federal funding to establish a quantum science lab and develop a technician training program.
Central New Mexico Community College, along with the University of Colorado Boulder, is the workforce development lead for Elevate Quantum. Elevate Quantum is a consortium of 120 organizations in the Mountain West working together to bridge cutting-edge research with economic development. Elevate Quantum is a designated Tech Hub by the US Economic Development Administration (EDA). The consortium’s mission is to create more than 10,000 new quantum jobs by 2030.
CNM Ingenuity is working with Sandia National Labs to create the technician training program, which begins later this month. Only about twenty percent of quantum-related jobs require advanced degrees. The other eighty percent are high-tech manufacturing positions in the semiconductor, solar manufacturing, and opto-electronics industries. There are no prerequisites for the training program, and graduates can expect starting salaries between $65,000 and $85,000 per year.
The lab itself is filled with a medley of optics, photonics, and ultra-high vacuum systems equipment. Participants can expect to learn about:
- Optics and photonics: lasers, detectors, beam tuning and manipulation
- Ultra-high vacuum systems: assembly, operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting
- Quantum phenomenon and quantum information systems

If you’re looking for a jewelry bench, FUSE will have one available to members soon. Jewelry classes now take place at CNM’s main campus.
